Whitby's Nick Cotter fires home four in Boston win

Several Durham Region players factor into NLL results from week three

Jan 28, 2010 - 02:53 PM

BOSTON -- Whitby's Nick Cotter is having quite the early season impact for the Boston Blazers.

Despite the team's struggles to date, as their 1-3 record would indicate, Cotter is off to a hot start with eight goals in four games, including four in Boston's first victory of the season last weekend, a 13-9 decision over the Orlando Titans.

Cotter's eight goals match his entire output from last season, achieved as a rookie in 12 games. Heading into Saturday's contest at home to the Philadelphia Wings, the 23-year-old former Whitby Warrior is tops on the club in that department and third in points with 11.

Another pair of Durham Region natives helped their team to a win in week three as well, with Oshawa resident Gavin Prout picking up four assists and Orono's Ian Crashley two in an Edmonton Rush 11-7 victory over the Buffalo Bandits.

Elsewhere around the league, former Brooklin Redmen sniper Jeff Zywicki added to his league-leading scoring totals in a pair of wins for the Washington Stealth. In a 16-15 win over the Calgary Roughnecks, he had two goals and six points, while adding another goal and six points in a 13-11 victory over Buffalo.

In the wake of dropping both of their weekend games and falling to 0-4, Buffalo released two players this week, including Oshawa's A.J. Shannon.

In four games this season, Zywicki has 10-16-26 totals.

Zack Greer and the Minnesota Swarm lost a tight one to Colorado, 15-14 in overtime, with Greer, a Whitby native, picking up a goal and two helpers and Whitby's Jay Thorimbert a goal and an assist.

In Philadelphia, Hampton's Jason Crosbie chipped in a goal, but the Wings lost 12-11 in overtime to Colorado.

In the other game from last weekend, the Toronto Rock remained undefeated at 3-0 with a 17-3 drubbing of the Rochester Knighthawks.
