Pickering's Erik Glavic leads Calgary into Uteck Bowl

Will play his former team in national semifinal Saturday

Nov 20, 2009 - 04:30 AM

HALIFAX -- Erik Glavic is back in familiar territory this week, but as the enemy.

The Pickering native, and quarterback of the University of Calgary Dinos, led his team to a Canada West football championship last week, which allowed for a trip to the Uteck Bowl, to be played Saturday (1 p.m.) in Halifax against the St. Mary's Huskies, the team Glavic spent the early part of his Canadian Interuniversity Sport career with.

And as he did with the Huskies, the 6-foot-6, 230 pounder, who won a Hec Crighton Trophy as the CIS top football player in 2007 while with the Huskies, is putting up some huge numbers.

After being named the Canada West Football MVP last week, Glavic showed why in leading the Dinos to a 39-38 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies. The 23-year-old threw for 479 yards and three touchdowns, while also compiling a touchdown and over 100 yards on the ground in the win.

That performance also came on the heels of Glavic being nominated for this season's Hec Crighton, in the process becoming the first player to be nominated for two different schools.

It's certainly a deserving nomination for him as the former St. Mary Secondary School product threw for 2,186 yards and rushed for another 503 on the season in leading the Dinos to a 7-1 record, the school's best mark in over 20 years. His 14 touchdown passes were tops in Canada West.

This trip to the Uteck Bowl is Glavic's second trip to the national semifinal, and while the last one resulted in a trip to the Vanier Cup for the Huskies, it also marked the end of Glavic's 2007 season as he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the game, forcing him to miss the national final.

Following the injury, Glavic rehabbed to the point where he returned to the Huskies lineup during the 2008 season, albeit for only one quarter of action before departing due to concerns with his knee.

In January of this year, Glavic completed a transfer to Calgary, and according to the Dinos website, he may join the men's basketball team following the football season.

Should the Dinos win this weekend, they will play the winner of Queen's and Laval in the Vanier Cup, which is set for Nov. 28.
