ROCHESTER, NEW YORK -- Gavin Prout and Shawn Williams are teammates once more.
No, neither one of them has returned to the Brooklin Redmen of the Major Series Lacrosse loop, but, with the recent announcement that Prout, a Whitby native, was traded to the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League, it meant the two local stars will once again team up after both won a field lacrosse championship with the Toronto Nationals this past summer.
Prout and Andrew Potter, along with a pair of first-round picks, were acquired by the Knighthawks from the Colorado Mammoth for the rights to Ilija Gajic and a first-round pick.
"It is a very good deal for the Knighthawks," said Rochester owner and CEO Curt Styres. "We got a couple of draft picks and shored up the right side with Prout. Andrew Potter won the (junior) scoring championship last year and should do very well."
Prout, who enters his ninth year in the NLL, will become an unrestricted free agent following the 2010 season.
During his NLL career, the former Whitby Warrior and Mann Cup winner with the Redmen has 230 goals and 441 assists in 127 games. He is the Mammoth's all-time leading scorer and has served as team captain since 2005.
Prout, 31, was the first overall pick by the New York Saints in the 2001 draft and spent the past six seasons in Colorado.
With all he accomplished as a member of the Mammoth, including a league championship, the organization insists it wasn't easy to part with Prout.
"Gavin Prout has been a cornerstone of this organization for the past six years," said Colorado general manager Steve Govett. "He's been a key to our success on the field and was the captain of our 2006 championship team -- what more can I say? We simply wish him the absolute best."
Williams, meanwhile, will be entering his ninth season with the Knighthawks, where he serves as team captain.
