Catholic budget improved

DURHAM -- A $4.9-million shortfall in this year's budget has been reduced to $2.7 million thanks to some provincial government grants and a readjustment of reserve funds, the superintendent of finance told the Durham Catholic District School Board at its board meeting this week.

"The Province recognizes there's a decline in enrolment in all the school boards, so they're giving us more money based on the number of schools rather than the number of students," said Ryan Putnam, referring to the recent addition of $300,000 in grants to the DCDSB's coffers.

On May 12, Mr. Putnam will outline his plan to trustees to trim some expenditures and, after a final decision is given on the accommodation review committee for Oshawa schools on May 26, he'll return to the board with a draft budget for next year.
