OTTAWA -- Well, that was quick.
The Oshawa Generals are moving on to the next round of the Ontario Hockey League playoffs after sweeping the Ottawa 67’s in four straight games.
The Generals completed the sweep last night in Ottawa, building a 3-0 lead in the first period and coasting to a 4-1 victory to end the best-of-seven East Conference quarterfinal series in the minimum four games.
Known for their offence and lack of defence during the regular season, the Generals tightened things up in this series, allowing just six goals over the four game series.
John Tavares opened the scoring in the first period on a low wrist shot, and was followed by goals from Dale Mitchell and Ryan McGinnis, on the power play, before the end of the first period.
Mitchell would be the centre of attention toward the end of the first period when he received a major penalty and game misconduct for hitting Bowmanville resident Tyler Cuma into the end boards. The 67’s defenceman was helped from the ice, but returned early in the second period.
The 67’s had the only goal of the middle period when Logan Couture deflected a point shot that slipped past Michal Neuvirth.
But with the game winding down, Kory Nagy scored the final goal of the series with 1:34 remaining, banging in a rebound.
The Generals will meet the Niagara Ice Dogs in the next round, while Belleville and Barrie will meet in the other semi.
