Oshawa swimmers excel in the pool
Thu Mar 27, 2008

OSHAWA -- The Oshawa Aquatic Club enjoyed a very busy short course championship season.

It got started with a bang at the Central Region Championships in Etobicoke where Rylee Greer earned a silver medal in the girls' 14-year-old 800m freestyle.

Her time of 9:35.05 qualified her for the Junior Provincial Championships as well as the Eastern Canadian Championships. OSHAC's team of 26 swimmers was able to battle to a 16th place finish out of the 43 teams in the Central Region.

Next up was the Eastern Canadian Championships also held in Etobicoke. With this year being an Olympic year, the meet was held long course to help those who are preparing for the Beijing Trials taking place next week.

Oshawa was represented by Robert Irvine, Marc McCulloch, and Andrea Horeczy. All swimmers had solid swims with Rob going on to have second swims in the 400m IM and the 200m fly.

The OAC have also hosted its annual pentathlon. Sponsored by AmeriSciences, the event brought four teams together for some very tight and exciting racing. Swimmers had to race all four strokes (fly, back, breast and freestyle) followed by a 200m IM. The swimmer with the lowest time score is selected as the winner. Coming out on top for the 15 and over women, was OAC's own Kirstyn McCasey. She was followed by her sister Kelsey in the women's 13 and 14 age category.

Soon after the club competed at the Swim Ontario Junior Provincial Championships in London. The Oshawa club was represented by Carleigh Barrett, Brandon Bronson, Andrea Horeczy, Rylee Greer, Julian Popovici, Josh Shannick, and Robert Irvine.

Making his presence known here was Brandon Bronson. Everything he swam was a club record. He set new marks in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle as well as a new club record and a gold medal in the boys 12-year-old 200m back with a time of 2:22.66.

The time ranks him as the fastest 12-year-old boy in Canada right now according to club coach Gordon Sprung.

Carleigh Barrett just missed the podium with a fourth place finish in the 200m fly with a time of 2:32.48. Her time here is good enough to qualify for the Age Group Nationals in Calgary this summer. Robert Irvine was also in action, finishing fifth in the 800m free as well as sixth in the 200m fly and the 400m IM, and seventh in the 200m IM. Irvine set senior club records in the 200m fly, 2:07.69 and the 200 IM, 2:08.89.

Oshawa managed a 33rd place finish overall out of the 120 teams in Ontario.
