WHITBY -- Kyle Musselman has never had a night quite like the one he experienced Wednesday night.

Musselman capped a hat trick Wednesday night, scoring a breakaway goal 7:21 into overtime to lift the Whitby Dunlops to a 6-5 victory over the Dundas Real McCoys to capture their third straight Robertson Cup championship and send the club to yet another Allan Cup national championship.

A resident of Whitby, and graduate of the local minor hockey system, Mussleman also scored goals in the first and second periods.

Neither compared to the overtime winner, though.

“It felt like a huge weight off my shoulders,” he said moments after the game. “I can’t really explain it in words it’s just an unbelievable feeling.”

The Dunnies almost had the game put away in regulation, but Mike Kennedy scored with 23 seconds remaining on the clock, beating Whitby’s Chad Ford with a chip shot over the glove.

Also scoring goals for Whitby were Steve Birch and Colin Baker and captain Peter MacKellar.

After losing in the final each of the last two years, the Dunlops will be hoping the third time is a charm in their chase for that elusive Allan Cup.

This year’s tournament is being held in Brantford and opens up on April 14.
