DURHAM -- More than 1,000 tickets were handed out to motorists caught speeding in school zones during a blitz conducted by Durham police last week. Officers also arrested three people for drunk-driving offences during the initiative, part of the service's ongoing effort to combat aggressive driving. Cops across the region were on the lookout for bad driving as students returned to school after their March break. Police laid more than 1,380 charges, 1,056 of which were for speeding. Another 28 tickets were written for stop sign and red light infractions, and drivers also received tickets for failing to wear seatbelts, driving while under suspension and without insurance and other offences, police said. Durham police have vowed to continue their campaign to address aggressive driving.
