Rider wants waste container at transit stop

Feb 03, 2010 - 11:57 AM

To the editor:

As a regular rider on Durham Transit, I contacted them in the spring about the lack of garbage pickup at my stop on Courtice Road and Hwy. 2 (north side).

They informed me that it was not their waste container and therefore not their responsibility, but that of Durham Region.

I then contacted Durham Region and they indicated it was Durham Transit's responsibility.

I sent an email with photo to Clarington Councillor Adrian Foster and shortly thereafter the garbage container was emptied. It is now the winter and there is no waste container (it just disappeared). What are the bus riders and pedestrians to use when they finish their drink?

When you travel along Hwy. 2 into Oshawa, each of the stops has a new unit that allows for recycling and they do appear to be emptied on a regular basis. There is no garbage spilling out of it and into the streets. Why is it that the Courtice Road stop has nothing? There is the creek and wetland area below and the garbage is just blowing down into them. How are we helping out the environment and the wildlife that lives there by just allowing the garbage to accumulate? Take a walk along this route and you will be disgusted with what you see.

I know there will always be people who drop their garbage where they are instead of disposing of it properly, but for those of us who would like to do the right thing, there is nowhere to put it.
