Most Canadians would approve of honouring RCMP officers

To the editor:

Re: Keep Highway of Heroes for troop deaths only, Brian Wilkins letter, Jan. 26.

I would like to try to help Brian Wilkins feel a little more comfortable about the proper protocol for the Highway of Heroes by using a direct quote from page 56 of General Rick Hillier's book, A Soldier First:

"When the briefer finished, I spoke. 'You know,' I told them, 'yesterday was a tough day. We lost six awesome, great, young Canadians who died because of their service to Canada. We're going to bring them home, and we're going to show them all the respect and honour that they have earned and deserve. We are going to look after their buddies, who are stressed; we're going to support their families in this, the worst time of their lives, making sure they are looked after every step of the way, and there are not going to be any limitations on that help.'"

I think General Rick Hillier Could just as easily have been talking of those two RCMP officers who died in the service of Canada. I think the general would be in support of this, as well as most Canadians.
