To the editor:
This past weekend was the 10th annual Operation Warm Hearts Coat Sale. I was deeply moved by the families who were troubled and who needed help. They were tremendously thankful to those who donated and organized the coat sale.
Since Operation Warm Hearts started in 1999, we have seen the generosity pour out from local families supplying coats and outerwear, Thanks to Double H cleaners for cleaning and storing over 3,300 coats, the Rotary Club for funding the setup of the coat sale and the Roxy kids who help set up and help run the coat sale and the public schools which have hosted us. All of these incredible individual efforts add up to support local families staying warm for the last decade.
These efforts have brought the total donations for the food bank to $3,325, with this year's total of 255 coats, and subsequent $383 in donation going to the Loaves and Fishes Food bank over the last 10 years. It also needs to be noted that thousands of coats have gone back into our community to agencies like the Homelessness Prevention of North Durham Outreach, Durham Children's Aid Society, and various women's shelters to spread the warmth of giving.
Lastly, this would not be possible without the tireless efforts of Maggie McCreath, who continues to plan and coordinate every aspect of Operation Warm Hearts. We are a community blessed with love and hope.
