Whitby industrial fire sends one employee to hospital

Small blaze said to be result of power failure

WHITBY -- One woman has been taken to hospital with smoke inhalation after a small fire at south Whitby's Johnson Controls plant this morning.

The fire started in the machine area of the building as a result of a power failure, which caused a hot press to rest on a plastic surface for a "prolonged" period, Whitby fire department spokeswoman Shauna Coulter said.

Firefighters were called to the plant at 8:33 a.m., but when they arrived they found Johnson Control employees had already doused the small blaze.

"It was just the smoke we had to clear out of the production area that was giving us the most trouble," said platoon chief Dave Fleming from the scene.

The building was evacuated and one female Johnson Controls employee was taken to hospital.

Workers have been allowed to return to the building's cafeteria area, while fire department officials ventilate the building.
