WHITBY -- Durham Region Transit is continuing to develop its long-term transit strategy and is seeking input from residents along the way.
The strategy is aimed at creating a blueprint for transit services in the region to the year 2031 and beyond. The goal is to ensure rapid transit and maintain its role within sustainable transportation options.
A series of open houses have already been held across the region, encouraging people to have their say on the planning process.
"I think that having the public consultation in this report allows us to receive and allow the (public's) comments because this is a very sensitive topic," Mayor Pat Perkins said, encouraging people to offer feedback on the plans.
Councillor Lorne Coe also emphasized the importance of hearing from the public at every step of the project.
"The process of engagement that we have with our community and in the final analysis of reaching and putting in place a strategy on public transit in Durham Region is absolutely critical because it's going to kick-start our economy," he said.
The next public consultation meeting for Durham Region Transit's long-term transit strategy will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23 at the Brooklin branch of the Whitby Public Library at 150 Winchester Rd. W.
