Zephyr residents work to build park shelter

Help needed with fundraisers, labor

May 15, 2008 - 11:07 AM

By Andrew Dalrymple

UXBRIDGE - Residents of Zephyr are working together to build a community shelter in the hamlet's park and have planned a number of upcoming fundraisers in support of the project.

The shelter, to be built in Zephyr Park, is a need identified by the community, said Pat Molloy, chairman of the Zephyr Hall board.

"There was a community meeting a year ago, and a survey was sent out," said Mr. Molloy. "There is no shade in the park, just wide open sunshine."

The shelter will be a 36-foot gazebo, in the shape of an octagon. There will be room for 10 picnic tables underneath.

"This will bring a lot of people to the park and the hall," said Mr. Molloy. "People should use the park, it's there for them."

Currently, fundraising events are being planned in order to raise $10,000 toward the $35,000 cost of the structure. But one thing that won't be on the bill is the price of labour.

The community will be building the shelter and more volunteers are needed, said Mr. Molloy.

One of the main fundraisers will be the selling of commemorative bricks with family names inscribed on them. The bricks will be included as part of the structure to remain in perpetuity. The bricks will cost $100.

Other fundraisers include:

- May 29 - Movie Night at Zephyr Hall.

- May 31 - A giant garage and bake sale from 7 a.m. to noon, at the community park.

- June 27 - The gospel group 'The Nehrkorns' will be performing at Zephyr Hall.

- July 5 - Casino Dance at Zephyr Hall.

Zephyr Hall will also be the site of a fundraising meeting on May 22 at 7 p.m.

Those who can help with any of the events can contact Pat Molloy at 905-473-5919 or bev.pat.molloy@sympatico.ca. To donate items for the May 31 garage sale, call Marg Cain at 905-473-5753.
