UXBRIDGE - Residents of Uxbridge and their canine friends can take a walk this month to help raise money for a good cause.
The Uxbridge Lions Club is hosting the 25th Purina Walk for Dog Guides, a program that provides dog guides to people with disabilities.
The event will be held May 25 at 1 p.m. at Elgin Park. All proceeds for the walk go towards funding Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guide programs. Participation is open to all ages and fitness levels, with or without a dog, and there is no fee to register.
Currently in its 25th year, the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides is a national charity with a goal of providing service to Canadians with disabilities who would otherwise lack mobility, safety and independence. The program receives no government funding.
The foundation runs four dog guide programs: canine vision dog guides, providing assistance to the blind or visually impaired; hearing ear dog guides, helping the deaf or hard of hearing; special skills dog guides, for those with physical disabilities; and seizure response dog guides, giving assistance to those with epilepsy.
While the cost of raising and training a dog guide is approximately $20,000, each eligible candidate is provided a dog, including all required training, travel and accommodation, at no charge.
For more information on the walk, or to register, visit www.purinawalkfordogguides.com.
