Run for the Diamond in Uxbridge

Prizes up for grabs at upcoming fundraising event

Feb 05, 2010 - 11:33 AM

UXBRIDGE -- It's time to start training to make a Run for the Diamond in Uxbridge.

The Uxbridge Cottage Hospital Auxiliary is hosting the third annual Run for the Diamond on Sunday, April 25, with the first of four events kicking off at 8:45 a.m. in Elgin Park that day.

While the run isn't until April, those aged 18 and older who register by April 19 are eligible to win a $5,000 diamond from Uxbridge's Rutledge Jewellers.

The categories this year include Kids' Dash, half marathon, 10-kilometre and five-kilometre family run/walk. Those who finish the half marathon and 10-kilometre routes receive medals, while there are rosettes for the five-kilometre finishers. The overall top male and female runners for all three races, which boast "scenic trails and country roads", in both the 16 to 39 age group (open) or 40 and over (masters), win diamond pins designed by Rutledge. There are also $4,500 worth of gift certificates for New Balance and Running Room up for grabs, among other prizes, according to organizers.

There is free parking plus food for sale, exhibits and children's activities featured throughout the day. Those who register by March 31 will take advantage of early bird rates of $55 for half marathon, $25 for 10-kilometre, $20 for five-kilometre and $10 flat rate for youth aged eight to 15, with funds to be used towards a digital bone density machine for the Uxbridge hospital.

Registration can be completed online at www.runningroom.com, or an entry form can be downloaded from www.uxbridgehalfmarathon.ca, where more information can be found about the run.

The Greater Uxbridge Road Runners club is offering 10-week race training programs starting Monday, Feb. 15 to help participants prepare for the April 25 events. Visit www.gurrclub.org.
