UXBRIDGE -- The Township will soon have another tourism tool in the form of free promotional videos created by an American company.
Uxbridge officials, during a recent committee meeting, said the municipality has entered into a "no strings attached" agreement with CGI based in New York.
"This video was offered to us at no cost," said Mayor Bob Shepherd.
But the mayor also said some Uxbridge businesses are now being approached by CGI to advertise alongside the video, which apparently has some merchants concerned.
"There is no obligation to businesses in town, they are at complete liberty to say no," said Mayor Shepherd. Clerk Debbie Leroux added, "We did approve the scripting (for the videos). But we don't endorse how they sell advertising, we aren't involved in that."
The Township has entered into a three-year deal with CGI, said the clerk. There will be six videos created for Uxbridge, highlighting "different aspects of the township" including quality of life, arts and entertainment, tourism, parks and trails, she said.
CGI is working with several other municipalities in Ontario including Belleville, Bracebridge and Port Hope, said Ms. Leroux.
Meanwhile, Councillor Bev Northeast questioned why Uxbridge is getting a new promotional video when another film, sponsored by Lafarge, already exists.
Ms. Leroux said while that video has been used to promote doctor recruitment, the CGI videos will have a "catch-all" approach.
The filming is scheduled to begin in June and the videos will be posted on the Township's redesigned website at
www.town.uxbridge.on.ca. To view the CGI video on Port Hope's website, click 'community videos' at
