UXBRIDGE -- Uxbridge councillors heard concrete plans Monday evening for a new mixing plant at an existing aggregate pit.
Project proponent Bill Kester said a Spartan Ready-Mix plant is proposed to be built near the intersection of Brock Road and Hwy. 47 at the Hockley Pit. The plant operation will occupy three acres of the existing 60-acre licensed area, he added.
Ready-mix consists of water, cement and aggregates, and Spartan plans to drill a well and draw less than 50,000 litres of water per day, said Mr. Kester.
But, among concerns from the public was possible effects to nearby residential well supplies as a result of the operation. Scott Grieve, who represents the Township's energy conservation committee, noted, "That seems like an awful lot of water to be taken in one day."
But Mr. Kester assured the public that a study has been completed showing there will be no impact to the nearby wells. A water system at the plant "contains and recycles water used in the production of concrete", those on hand also heard.
Another concern was truck traffic at the site. Mr. Kester noted there could be an increase of up to three trucks per hour entering and exiting the property, but he added there would be a decrease in the length of travel required by the trucks as materials are available on site.
Dust and noise measures will be taken, said Mr. Kester.
The plant will employ eight people, he said.
Residents with concerns should forward written correspondence to the Township's clerks department by Monday, Feb. 8.
