UXBRIDGE -- The Township is focusing on public uses for Kennedy House and will seek the public's input on proposed amenities.
Uxbridge officials last year opened the doors to private enterprises interested in moving into the recently-acquired property on Main Street North, with Mayor Bob Shepherd recently noting there were no solid offers. During a Jan. 18 planning committee meeting, a proposed bylaw was brought forward to expand public and non-profit uses for the site.
"This property was not bought to be commercial, it was for future recreational use," said Ingrid Svelnis, chief administrative officer.
If the property is rezoned, it would allow an arena, auditorium, cemetery, community centre, day nursery, fairground, nursing home, hospital, museum, place of worship and public school, among other uses, according to a report from Township consultant Macaulay Howson. The report also notes the current zoning on the majority of the property only allows for a private school and student housing.
While the intent of the rezoning is for a wider range of public facilities, there can still be private-run secondary uses inside those facilities such as a coffee shop, noted Liz Howson, consultant.
A public meeting regarding the rezoning will be held, but a date hasn't been set.
