DURHAM -- When it came time to celebrate our nation's birthday on July 1, it was the federal and provincial governments who were handing out gifts across Durham Region.
As part of Wednesday's Canada Day celebrations across the region, Durham MP Bev Oda announced more than $1 million in federal funding for eight community recreational infrastructure projects for three of Durham's northern municipalities.
In total, $1,025,674 was pledged for projects in Scugog, Clarington and Uxbridge as part of the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program in Ontario and Recreation Ontario.
Scugog Township will receive $140,000 to expand the Nestleton Community Hall while Uxbridge will pocket a total of $439,500 for improving UxPool ($118,000), renovating Uxbridge Arena ($211,500) and renovating the interior of the Uxbridge and District Curling Club for the facility's 50th anniversary celebrations ($110,000).
In Clarington, the municipality will receive $132,000 to replace the arena floor at the Darlington Sports Centre; $140,250 for replacing the roof and improving the refrigeration plan at the Newcastle Memorial Arena; and $166,667 for seating and dressing room improvements at the Garnet Rickard Recreation Complex.
As well, $7,257 has been earmarked for the Orono Amateur Athletic Association to carry out upgrades at the Orono Arena.
The funds are provided jointly though the federal and provincial governments to support municipal and community infrastructure projects and are part of a program aimed at helping to create jobs and stimulate the local economy.
"Investments in these local projects will enhance the facilities and services available, while contributing to the health and quality of life in each of our communities," said Ms. Oda in a press release. "During these challenging economic times, investing in recreation projects will also provide immediate economic stimulus at the local level, where it is needed."
"I am pleased to see the federal and provincial governments working together to invest in local infrastructure priorities here in Durham Region," said Durham MPP John O'Toole.
Added Joe Dickson, Ajax-Pickering MPP: "We are currently seeing a boost in federal and provincial support for recreational infrastructure throughout Durham Region. Renovations and expansions to these recreational facilities will help meet the needs of the rapid growth of Durham Region."
These projects are part of the 758 recreational infrastructure projects announced on June 26, worth a total joint federal and provincial investment of more than $380 million.
