Uxbridge's 'big dig' begins

Contractor to assist with garbage collection

UXBRIDGE -- The long-awaited 'big dig' is underway in Uxbridge's downtown.

The Region began reconstruction of Brock Street West from Toronto to Victoria streets on June 22 and the work will continue until the end of October, according to a Durham public service announcement.

"The road will be closed to through traffic in stages to minimize the impact to residents and businesses, while providing a safe work zone for the construction," reads the announcement. "The proposed work will include road reconstruction, installation of a new curb and gutter, sidewalk replacement, landscaping features, sanitary and storm sewer upgrades, and watermain replacement."

During the work, dubbed the 'big dig' by an Uxbridge committee overseeing the project, "residential and business driveway access will be interrupted, and on occasion there will only be pedestrian access," according to the Region release.

"The contractor will be available to assist with delivery of goods when access is restricted, as well as assist with waste collection programs during the construction period."

Bill Reid, a project manager with the Region, said business owners and residents along that stretch are asked to mark their address on waste collection bins, leaving the items at curbside, with the contractor to take the garbage to the perimeter of the construction zone for collection. He added the contractor will then return the bins to their rightful homes.

Unfavourable weather may affect the project timeline.
