A friend to walkers in Uxbridge

Devices for rent at Uxbridge pool

UXBRIDGE -- Using these hand-held devices can help walkers burn 20 to 40 per cent more calories, according to a Township official.

Those devices are 'urban walking poles', used to provide a better cardiovascular workout, and for stability, said Victoria Walker, Uxbridge's trails coordinator.

"They can help with a balance issue," she said.

Ms. Walker led a demonstration of the poles at Town Hall recently, noting they are adjustable in height. She added the 'boot' at the bottom of each device can be removed to expose a spike, allowing users to better dig into the ground.

Amanda Ferraro, the Township's recreation manager, said the lightweight poles "are for all ages ... it's very similar to cross-country skiing.

"We're the trails capital (of Canada), we might as well be the active capital."

The Township also plans in the near future to lend out pedometers to help walkers track how many steps they take.

"The goal is 10,000 steps a day, that's considered a great level of fitness," said Ms. Walker.

In the meantime, residents 18 and older (or accompanied by adult) can now rent urban poles at Uxpool, 1 Parkside Dr., for $5 a day, $10 per weekend or $15 per week.
