Uxbridge senior recognized by Province

Uxbridge presents award in special ceremony

UXBRIDGE -- When Rodine Egan was invited to council chambers recently, she thought she was there to see photos from Uxbridge's annual Huck Finn fishing derby.

At least that's what she was told.

But as it turns out, councillors had another plan in mind. The Township, with the help of the Uxbridge Legion colour guard and pipes, presented Ms. Egan with an Ontario Senior of the Year Award for her volunteer work in the community.

"This is indeed a privilege," said Councillor Jack Ballinger, also the president of the Legion. "Once a year we bring forward someone who is an outstanding senior ... we have a young lady who is very deserving."

Coun. Ballinger explained Ms. Egan was nominated for the provincial honour by the Township for her volunteer work with the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital Auxiliary and Community Care. As well as serving her community for years, she also served her country, noted Coun. Ballinger.

"She served in the Second World War (as a chief petty officer)," he said.

The Uxbridge senior is also a former president of the Catholic Women's League, said the councillor.

Ms. Egan was caught off guard by the presentation of the large framed certificate.

"I had no idea," she said with a smile.
