AJAX -- Although more than a month elapsed before the start and the completion of the Ajax Spartans Mosquito Tournament, the Ajax Spartans entry prevailed as champions of the event.
Started in mid-July, but postponed because of rain, the tournament was only recently completed, with the Spartans downing the Brampton Braves 3-2 in the championship game.
The final remained scoreless over the first two innings, with the Ajax mosquitoes grabbing the lead in the third inning, forging ahead by a 2-0 count. The Spartans held off the Braves the rest of the way to avenge an early loss to Brampton in preliminary action.
Ryan McConkey pitched the first five innings for the Spartans. Jacob Tiangco came into the game to pitch the sixth and seventh inning to close out the contest.
To advance to the championship game, the Ajax mosquitoes blasted Etobicoke 7-1. Starting pitcher Josh Marson worked four strong innings, giving up a single run. Jarel Barnett came on to pitch the last three innings and didn't surrender a single run to Etobicoke.
Team members are Trayton Austen, Chris Avery, Jarel Barnett, Payton Barnett, Michael Clarke, Austin Gomez, Josh Marson, Ryan McConkey, Alex Schweitzer, Jacob Tiangco and Isiah Wright.
Steve Avery manages the team, assisted by coaches Wayne Clarke, Pat McConkey and Brad Beckett.
