Athletes attend junior provincials, Bell Grand Prix

PICKERING -- Pickering Swim Club athletes competed and turned in solid efforts at two recent high-profile competitions.
Fourteen club swimmers brought home 13 medals from the recent Ontario Junior Provincial Long Course Championships at the Canada Games pool in Thunder Bay.
Sixty-two teams and 596 swimmers competed from across Ontario.
Three PSC swimmers struck gold at provincials. Carolina Gomba, 12, earned gold in the 100-metre freestyle. Alex Lee posted a gold-medal win in the girls' 10-and-under 50m breaststroke. Katie Webster, 14, struck gold in the 200m butterfly.
Gomba also earned silver in the 100m free. Lee was a silver medallist in the 100m breast and Amy Smith registered a silver medal in the girls' 10-and-under 50m breast.
Six PSC swimmers also captured bronze medals. They were: Gomba in the 200m free; Andrew Kay, 12, in the 200m breast; Emily Mayer, 12, in the 50m free; Alison Russell, 14, in the 1,500m free, Meghan Toswell, 14, in the 800m free; and Webster in the 400m individual medley.
The PSC's girls' 13-14 age group 400m free relay team of Carleen Ginter, Kayla Ginter, Russell and Toswell earned a bronze medal.
Toswell was the recipient of the 'Iron Swimmer Award' for the highest standing in the 800m free (third-place finish) and 400m IM (fourth-place finish) in her age group.
Other athletes who competed and put forth strong performances were Emily Goodwin, Rayah Gugliotta, Hollie Smith and Michelle Spencer.
Meanwhile, six of the club's senior swimmers competed at the Bell Grand Prix/Coupe de Quebec in Montreal recently.
Jose Baylon, 15, placed eight in the boys' 13-and-over 200m breast.
Jessica Ward, 19, placed eight in the girls' 12-and-over 200m breast.
Allison Foster, 15, finished eighth in the girls' 12-and-over 800m free.
Adam Gomba, 16, placed 11th in the boys' 13-and-over 200m free.
Ainsley Corkum, 15, placed 18th in the girls' 12-and-over 800m free.
Jeff Cernele, 17, was 30th in the men's 13-and-over 200m IM
Pickering Swim Club members will next compete at the Age Group Nationals in Calgary from July 24 to 27. Competing are Ainsley Corkum, Meghan Toswell and Katie Webster.
