As the May 12 council session got under way, Scugog Mayor Marilyn Pearce noted the southwestern corner of the Port Perry Fairgrounds was unsightly, mainly due to that large parcel of land being used by the municipality as a dumping grounds as part of the Township's snow-clearing process. Besides the white stuff, any refuse hidden away in snowbanks is also trucked to the greenspace at the corner of Reach Street and Old Simcoe Road where it is dumped in a corner of the lot.

"It's still in quite a mess. Do we plan to clean that up?" asked the mayor.

In response, Gene Chartier, the Township's commissioner of planning and public works, noted that his department had "not contemplated anything further" with regards to cleaning the grounds.

"If I was the (Port Perry) fair board, I wouldn't allow you to dump snow there anymore," shot back Mayor Pearce.

She then suggested the municipality utilize laid-off arena attendants, paid at an hourly wage, and summer students already on the payroll to tidy up the fairgrounds.

"It's still quite a mess there," said Mayor Pearce.
