PORT PERRY -- A band of local firefighters is aiming to help out the Port Perry Legion and local veterans next month when it plays host to a fundraising dart tournament.

Slated to be held June 14 at the Port Perry Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 419, the inaugural tournament will be hosted by the Caesarea Firefighters' Association. All proceeds from the day, says Rick Olaisen, will be passed along to the local Legion.

"We know the veterans and the Legion could use it," says Mr. Olaisen of the anticipated funds.

Registration for the double-elimination tournament will run from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Port Perry Legion, located at 484 Bay St. The competition will start at 11 a.m.

Up to 32 teams of four can participate in the event. Individuals are also welcome to take part, as they will be assigned to teams.

There is a fee of $50 per team, or $15 per person.

Interest in hosting a dart tournament, explains Mr. Olaisen, stems from past days spent with his grandfather, Second World War veteran and Legion supporter Bill Dickinson of Prince Albert, who has since passed away.

"My grandfather got me into the Legion and they were always doing a dart league there," he says. "We figured it was a great way for people in the summer to get out and to raise money for (the Legion).

"We wanted to do something different and a dart tournament seemed like something new for the community. It seems like a way to raise money for a good cause and we want to try and get the Legion as much money as possible to help them out," says Mr. Olaisen.

It's hoped, he continues, that any funds raised at next month's event can help the Legion with renovation costs and other facility needs, as well as lend a hand to any veterans in need of assistance.

Those with an interest in participating are asked to stop by the Legion or to call Mr. Olaisen in advance as organizers prefer to know how many players to expect on game day. Mr. Olaisen can be reached at 905-986-1562.
