A healthy approach to eating in Scugog

Fish, berries good choices in winter, say experts

SCUGOG -- Fish and blueberries.

While they might not taste so great together, both are tasty on their own and are examples of healthy choices during the winter months when people tend to load up on carbohydrates, according to food experts who visited the area recently to film a television show. Chef Ezra Title and nutritionist Julie Daniluk, of the VIVA show Healthy Gourmet, said it's easy to forget to eat right during the colder season.

During the taping on the north side of Lake Scugog, near Little Britain, on Jan. 31, Mr. Title tried his hand at ice fishing with the help of Causeway Live Bait, and struck gold quickly. "In less than five minutes I caught a fish," he said, noting they were angling for crappie, walleye and perch.

But, while he doesn't guarantee all beginners will catch a fish on their first go, he stressed fish is an easy dish for anyone to prepare. And there's a "million" ways to prepare it, he added. "Fish pie is delicious," he said. "Pan roasted is beautiful."

You don't need to be a professional chef to cook fresh fish, he explained. "Keep it simple," suggests Mr. Title. Added his co-host, "Fish is the perfect natural fast food." Ms. Daniluk also said fish is packed with Omega 3 vitamins that boost the immune system.

While the group on set chowed down on fish pie, they also had a berry pie prepared and waiting.

"Blueberries grow 10 miles from the Arctic Circle," said Ms. Daniluk. "It's the perfect food to enjoy in the middle of winter ... a lot of people eat healthy in summer and have carb cravings in winter."

Healthy Gourmet, now in its second season, pits the two food gurus against each other "as the ongoing battle of taste vs. nutrition goes to new heights outside of the traditional home setting with unique groups of real people," reads a synopsis of the show.

The episode is set to air this summer.
