New crop of scarecrows coming to Port Perry soon

Sep 21, 2008 - 04:30 AM

PORT PERRY -- Bring out yer scarecrows!

It's time for the third annual Scarecrow Festival, put on by Meta4 Contemporary Craft Gallery and the Port Perry BIA. Scarecrows will be on display for harvest activities Oct. 4 and 5, with judging taking place Oct. 6. There are prizes for best family entry, most original and best business entry.

If you made a scarecrow last year, haul it out, dust it off and give them a new look or start from scratch. If you're not sure you've got the resources at home, you can contribute to the community effort by taking part in a scarecrow building workshop Oct. 5 at 10:30 a.m. in the municipal parking lot.

"Our goal is to create 20 scarecrows for the downtown area," said Birgitta MacLeod, gallery co-owner. "Families and individuals can pitch in and add their personal touch."

The workshop is one of many community activities during Gates Open and Doors Open that weekend. There'll be live music on the streets, wagon ride tours, a farmers' market, pumpkin decorating, face painting and more.

If you can't make the scarecrow workshop, you can help out by donating old clothes, accessories such as wigs, hats, gloves, old pool noodles (for arms) or anything scarecrows might need. Donations can be dropped off at the Visitor and Business Information Centre, Meta4, Brock's and Luke's.

There's no charge to enter festival competition but you must register in advance and your scarecrow must be visible from the street or sidewalk for judging week. Registration forms and a tips sheet are available at Meta4, 200 Queen St. For more information, contact the gallery at 905-985-1534, info@meta4gallery.ca.
