Lots to do at Parkwood during March break

Feb 04, 2010 - 02:37 PM

OSHAWA -- Parkwood Estate will be offering several programs for children and youth during the upcoming March break week.

The Life of a Servant offers kids the chance to scrub laundry on a washboard, sweep out the hearth and try out other duties performed by the mansion's former servants, during interactive tours.

The hour-and-a-half sessions are recommended for ages six to 12. Tours will run at 1:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. from March 15 to 19 at a cost of $10 per child.

Parkwood will also be featuring a week-long program based on classic novel The Secret Garden.

Participants will cook on a period stove, create vintage crafts and plant "treasures" to take home with various characters from the book. This program runs from 9:30 a.m. until noon each day, from March 15 to 19. It is appropriate for ages six to 12 and costs $115.

Tweens ages 11 to 14 are invited to try out Garden Gems for Young Green Thumbs. Budding gardeners will learn about mosaic garden design and how it inspired the Italian garden at the estate, while creating their own mosaic motif planter. Garden Gems runs from 9:30 a.m. until noon on March 18 and costs $25.

All three March break programs require registration. For more information, call 905-433-4311.
