OSHAWA -- A 42-year-old Ajax woman was airlifted to Sunnybrook hospital Thursday morning after firefighters used the jaws of life to free her from her vehicle after a crash at an Oshawa intersection.
The woman’s black Nissan had flipped on the driver’s side in the two-vehicle collision at Mary Street and Rossland Road just after 11 a.m. Oshawa firefighters cut the roof off the small SUV to free the trapped woman, who is being treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries.
“We did it very slowly and methodically,” platoon chief Dan Tennisco explained. “We needed to cut the car away from the person so she could be rescued.”
He added, “It was a very serious accident. Anytime we need to bring in the heavy rescue equipment, the accident is very serious.”
The woman was moved from the car onto a stretcher and placed in an ambulance as emergency crews waited for an air ambulance to land in the yard of nearby Dr. S.J. Phillips Public School.
The appearance of the large, orange helicopter prompted spectators to crowd around the property to watch the rescue unfold.
The other driver, a 71-year-old Oshawa woman, was taken to Lakeridge
Health Oshawa, treated for minor injuries and released, police said.
Road conditions have been ruled out as a factor in the collision.
The road was closed until just after 2 p.m. as investigators tried to piece together how the accident happened.
