DURHAM -- The Oak Ridges Moraine has rolling hills, kettle lakes, rivers and trails. Taking a picture of them could win a resident some cash. Monitoring the Moraine (MTM) and Caring for the Moraine (CMP) present a Moraine in Focus photo contest to increase awareness and appreciation of the moraine. The grand prize is $1,000 with the youth winner being awarded $500. "The Moraine in Focus photo contest is all about capturing and enshrining the beauty and wonder of the moraine and then making these images available for everyone to see," says Debbe Crandall, executive director of Save the Oak Ridges Moraine Coalition. Photo submissions must fall into one of the following categories: land and water, plants and animals or people and communities. In addition to the grand prizes, a prize is awarded to regional winners in each category. For this contest, the moraine is divided into three areas: West (Peel, York, Dufferin and Simcoe), Central (Durham, Kawartha Lakes) and East (Peterborough, Northumberland). Winning entries and local submissions are displayed at venues across the moraine in November. The pictures also appear in educational and promotional materials of MTM, CMT and their partners. Entries are being accepted from now until Oct. 15. Youth entrants must be under 16 years of age as of May 15. For more information about the contest visit www.monitoringthemoraine.ca/moraineinfocus, e-mail contest@monitoringthemoraine.ca or call Kate at 905-579-0411 ext. 106.
