Bicyclists should be more considerate

Jul 02, 2009 - 10:52 AM

To the editor:

Re: Stop bike riders from rolling on sidewalks, Arnaldo Beni letter, June 26.

I often hear bike riders saying how car drivers are inconsiderate. This is the pot calling the kettle black.

I am a disabled pensioner. I walk for fresh air and exercise. I walk along Simcoe Street South from King Street to First Avenue. I often have to step out into Simcoe Street traffic to avoid being hit by the bicycles.

For me, today was the last straw. I had to step into the street five times. On First Avenue I stopped to speak to a neighbour. I was forced off the sidewalk by a lady and her children, all on bikes.

When she said a "comment" to me, I mentioned how she should be on the road. She said she is teaching her children to stay off the road and if an old man must be pushed out of the way, so be it.

It was proven in New York City that if you enforce the minor laws the major laws are followed.

This city has parents teaching their children to break the laws. I see police on bicycles. I hope they will enforce the bicycle laws.
