Incineration is best option for now

Jul 02, 2009 - 10:52 AM

To the editor:

I don't see another viable option for disposing of residual waste other than through incineration.

The zero waste solution being pushed by some is unworkable at our community level. Zero waste occurs when manufacturers and producers make products that come in completely recyclable containers and the products themselves need to be 100 per cent recyclable as well.

This type of pressure cannot come from Durham Region alone -- zero waste requires a concerted national and international effort to reduce packaging and make end products recyclable. That is why, for now, incineration is the best option. Do what you can to cut consumption and waste in your own lives so that you are not contributing as much material to the incinerator. That is the best thing Durham residents can do for now.
