Council had no mandate to build incinerator

Jun 30, 2009 - 02:38 PM

To the editor:

At the June 16 and 24 meetings of Durham Regional council, approximately 140 delegations, including Clarington medical doctors, a physicist, a United Church minister, a retired chartered accountant and a professor at Durham College registered their opposition to the proposed garbage incinerator.

We quoted studies conducted by the Canadian Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the British Medical Association, the French Medical Association, the US Environmental Protection Agency, several pre-eminent authors and many other sources, all of which cited the negative health impacts of incineration especially on cardiovascular illness and cancer.

With the exception of six people, all citizens strongly opposed the construction of the incinerator. Also, a copious amount of e-mails, letters and phone calls registered strong opposition.

The overwhelming conduct and attitude of many councillors was obvious: We have already made up our minds and we are building the incinerator despite what the citizenry wants.

We also detailed the long list of serious environmental and labour relations violations committed by Covanta, the company contracted to build the incinerator. In spite of this it appears that councillors, with several exceptions, believed everything they were being told by Covanta which is in line to receive more than a quarter-billion dollars of our tax money.

Durham Regional Council had public information meetings in only one of eight municipalities. Most citizens of Durham are unaware of the serious consequences to our health, our environment and the very future of the planet! The politicians have not been mandated to build this monster.
