PORT HOPE - Thanks to the generousity of 15,000 Masonic Lodge members from Whitby to Colborne, autistic children throughout the area have received an early Christmas present.
On Dec. 16, the Autism Society, Durham and Peterborough Chapters accepted a $22,000 donation from the Masonic Ontario District at a presentation ceremony held at the Port Hope Masonic Lodge, says 2004/2005 District Grand Master, Samuel Hutnyk. During the year-term at the post, every grand master chooses a project to support, says Mr. Hutnyk.
"Children are very important and I selected the autism society to help them find a cure for this childhood disease," he says.
The original goal was $8,000 and money is raised through personal donations from Masonic Lodge members plus fundraising activities such as golf tournaments and dances. He says he was overwhelmed when the 15 lodges from Port Perry, Whitby through Colborne came in with $22,000.
"What a wonderful way to culminate a year's work," he concluded.
