Pump price watch wraps up summer patrol

Liberal gas watcher says pump prices may continue to decline

DURHAM -- Gas prices have dropped this week and there might be more good news coming to the pumps.

Newsdurhamregion.com will be ending the online price pump watch now that summer road trips are becoming a distant memory. But Dan McTeague, Liberal candidate for Pickering-Scarborugh East, said consumers may be able to get a little relief for their wallets when they fill up.

Prices have been "artificially high" over the past few months due to "unbridled speculation," Mr. McTeague said.

High gas prices are always a possibility when you have a "solid monopoly" like the market in the Greater Toronto Area but there is no doubt there will be downward pressure on prices, he said.

The difference between paying $1.095 or $1.349 a litre is about $12 for a full tank of gas in Ian Giffin's Ford Escape. To avoid pain at the pumps Mr. Giffin has tried tactics like driving to the cheapest station in Uxbridge, where he lives, he said.

"But nothing works to relieve this gasoline-induced migraine," Mr. Giffin said.

Mr. Giffin's story of expensive fill-ups was a familiar one over the summer when prices spiked and reached highs of more than $1.30 per litre.

Since May 15, newsdurhamregion.com has been tracking prices with the help of readers who update gas costs online. Prices are the lowest they have been in the past four and a half months right now, with the price per litre as low as $1.039.
