WHITBY -- Despite day-long rain, sign crews were fast out of the gate Sunday dotting the landscape with election signs.
David Glover, 53, of Whitby, is the sign chairman for the Jim Flaherty campaign in Whitby-Oshawa riding. It's his fourth campaign as sign chairman, the second one federally.
He was out Sunday afternoon with Sheldon McDonald , Oshawa; Frank Robertson, Whitby; and Roy Winter, Whitby, to stake out a prime spot on Thickson Road just north of Hwy. 401. Local motorists will recognize the location as the spot regularly occupied by Mr. Flaherty, his family and supporters on election day mornings. Mr. Flaherty has made a tradition of greeting commuters as they leave Whitby for Toronto on election day.
There was a steady drizzle just before 2 p.m. as Mr. Glover and his sign crew placed a large sign on the east side of Thickson.
"What we like to do is, we like to have some visibility right out of the gate," Mr. Glover said.
"In total, we've got hundreds (of signs)," he said.
Getting the signs up quickly sends the message "we're ready and we're going to run a full-fledged campaign" he said.
Declared candidates in the Whitby-Oshawa riding include Mr. Flaherty for the Conservatives, former newspaper publisher Doug Anderson for the Green Party and Brent Fullard for the Liberals.
