AFGHANISTAN -- A soldier less than one week away from the end of his rotation has been killed in Afghanistan.
Sgt. Scott Shipway was hit by a roadside explosion Sunday bringing the number of Canadians killed in Afghanistan to 97. The blast also injured 7 other soldiers.
Canadian Brig.-Gen. Denis Thompson, the commander of Task Force Kandahar, made the announcement about 12:45 p.m. (local time in Ontario).
"Scott was a seasoned veteran," said General Thompson.
"This was his second tour in Afghanistan and he had previous tours in Kosovo, Bosnia and Cyprus."
The attack that killed Sgt. Shipway occurred in the Panjwai district of southern Afghanistan.
His death came just hours after twilight tributes along on Hwy. 401 through Durham Region and Northumberland Saturday evening as the bodies of three soldiers, killed last week in Afghanistan, were driven by motorcade to Toronto from CFB Trenton.
