Second Chance Wildlife is holding an adopt-a-thon at Pet Smart, 1899 Brock Rd., Pickering to find homes for animals and to raise funds to keep the sanctuary open. 905-426-7593

Durham College Lords soccer home openers vs. Cambrian College. Women's game at 1 p.m., men's at 3 p.m. at Vaso's Field at Durham College, Simcoe Street North, Oshawa.

The launch of Beatrice and the Brooklin Project takes place at 2 p.m. at the Music Scene, 1150 Champlain Court, Whitby, to celebrate the new CD by JoAnne Alexander and Beatrice the Mouse. Sales of the children's CD will benefit programs for children at the new Brooklin branch of Whitby Public Library. Beatrice and Friends will perform.

Sept. 7

 Pagan Pride Day Festival is held at Memorial Park, Simcoe and John Streets, Oshawa, from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.  The festival combines celebration and public education with the aim of lessening prejudice towards people who practice modern paganism. There will be workshops, music, open jam with Firedance Drum Circle,  and religious ceremony that will begin at 5 p.m. Bring non-perishable food items for Simcoe Hall Settlement House food bank or gently-used clothing for Sages-femmes Rouge Valley Midwives. http://dppd.durhampagans.ca

Oshawa Rotary Ribfest takes place at Lakeview Park, Oshawa, from 11 a.m. to midnight Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 pp.m. Sunday. Entertainment throughout. www.oshawaribfest.com.


Durham Central Fair is held in Orono on the fairgrounds next to the arena on Princess Street. Cooking demonstrations, midway, entertainment, tractor pull, demolition derby and more. Fair opens 8:30 a.m. both days. Admission is $8, $10 after 4 Saturday, free for kids 13 and under when accompanied by adult. www.oronofair.com.

The 144th Uxbridge Fall Fair will be held in Elgin Park. Demolition derby, tractor pulls, musical entertainment, children’s fun, and midway rides will be featured. Children in Grade 8 or younger admitted free, regular admission $8 or $20 for the weekend. Parking at site $2 per vehicle. Overflow parking at Uxbridge Secondary School and Quaker Village Public School with shuttle service Saturday. Visit www.uxbridgefair.ca.
