To the editor:
If the government falls, most constitutional experts are claiming the Governor General will have no alternative but to ask the opposition to form a government that has the confidence of the House. They cite precedent that, should the government fall, it will have happened early in the first sitting leaving the Governor General no other alternative.
I would argue that, in the past, no party holding the balance of power was determined to bring about the demise of Canada by withdrawing from it.
Such a scenario will exist should the Governor General ask the opposition to form a government since the Bloc, although not a part of the coalition government, will nevertheless hold the balance of power. Therefore, it can be argued that this will be a unique situation which has never been seen before.
Therefore, the Governor General could unwittingly assist in helping to bring about the demise of Canada. Would the Governor General like to carry this burden throughout Canadian history? Would this be what Canadians want? Such a scenario would clearly be bad for Canada and I therefore believe that the Governor General has no alternative than to dissolve parliament in favour of another election.
