Better alternatives out there than incineration

Nov 19, 2008 - 02:43 PM

To the editor:

Re: Regional chairman gets credit for cutting police budget, Ailene Angus letter, Nov. 13.

Ailene Angus is premature in praising Roger Anderson's frugality.

While the Regional chairman cuts $300,000 from one budget, he still wants an incinerator that costs $150 million to build.

Add the monumental cost for the consultants who came up with this specious waste solution and the dollars needed to operate the facility for 35 years, that is, if it doesn't become obsolete in the face of upgraded emissions standards.

Mr. Anderson says that gas tax dollars will pay for the incinerator, not Durham taxpayers. Unfortunately, our taxes will go up to pay for everything else as the incinerator drains the Regional coffers.

Incinerators historically lead to significant property tax increases and, surprisingly often, municipal bankruptcy. The Region promises revenues from the energy created by the incinerator but the incinerator industry habitually overestimates these revenues in order to sell technology.

Besides, aren't we building a nuclear plant to provide us with energy? That Mr. Anderson continues to push incineration when there are viable, less costly and much greener alternatives available -- which would create many more jobs than incineration ever could -- is myopic. That they would move forward in our current economic situation is reprehensible.
