Volunteers ready to help out at hospital

Nov 19, 2008 - 10:19 AM

To the editor:

Re: Need changes at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, Peggy Sawyer letter, Nov. 13.

I read with concern Peggy Sawyer's letter.

As a senior and volunteer, I see many people who need help at the hospital.

Our hospitality volunteers stand ready at our hospital entrance to get wheelchairs, help patients into and around the hospital and chat with them in the comfort of the lobby as their "drivers" park their cars.

I understand that you prefer to stay with your husband, but as a person who helps greet patients, I have seen close calls and traffic gridlock. I also know that hospital security, fire officials, and city bylaw officers worry that people trying to reach our Emergency department for an emergency can't because of parked cars in the drop-off area and fire route.

Security personnel cannot issue tickets on Hospital Court. They are there to ensure public, patient, driver and fire safety for everyone in and outside the hospital.

I have also seen them assist patients and allow drivers the time to drop off patients and bring them into the hospital lobby.

I hope your husband is on the mend. The next time you or your husband are at our hospital, please come by . . . we love the company.
