To the editor:
With the constant push towards public transit as a solution to traffic congestion and seeing as the use of transit is the pillar behind the Provincial Infrastructure Investment Plan and the MoveOntario 2020 plan, I would expect any major parking construction initiative would take into consideration the 10-year growth anticipation of a regional area such as Whitby and not just the current needs.
Adding 35 per cent additional parking spaces to accommodate current parking needs does little if we are encouraging the non-transit public to adopt a shift in thinking and embrace transit. What will happen if the transit campaign is successful and 1,000 new riders from the Whitby area decide to attempt to take the GO? They'll arrive at the parking lot, find zero spaces and continue on their way in their vehicles into downtown Toronto, never to attempt that exercise again.
If we are to encourage a car-driving population to embrace transit, we need to ensure the infrastructure is in place to accommodate them. They cannot buy a GO train ticket if they cannot park their car and walk to the ticket booth!
