BOWMANVILLE -- The Clarington Green Gaels are forming a couple of habits early on in the OLA Jr. B lacrosse season.
The fact they are 4-0 this season isn't something new to the organization, which prides itself on winning and has done its fair share of it over the years. Look no further back than a year ago when they ran the table in the regular season, going a perfect 20-0-0.
The second habit has been established on their home floor, where they flirt with the opposition for two periods before absolutely dominating the final 20 minutes, producing a lopsided victory.
Both of those habits came out of Thursday's game against the Markham Ironheads. The Green Gaels carried a 5-4 lead into the third period, but scored seven unanswered, one short-handed, in what turned out to be a 12-4 route.
A week ago in the home opener, the Green Gaels scored 10 in a row in the last half of the game against Mississauga, turning a close game at 5-2 into a 15-3 final.
"In the third period the kids started making good passes, good choices and it was because they were warmed up by that point," said assistant coach Jonas Derks of Thursday's game against Markham. "Instead of using the first period as the warmup, we want them to use the warmup as the warmup."
Power-play goals kept Markham close in the early going, as the teams were tied 3-3 through the opening 20 minutes, with all three of their goals coming while the Green Gaels were short-handed.
Josh Merzbacher scored four times to lead the way in that department. Lucas Perri chipped in with six assists, while Ryan Serville had five. Other goal scorers included Shayne Jackson and Mike McCusker with two each, while Kyle Lindsay, Dan Pogmore, Mike Lum Walker and Eddie Belmonte had one each.
The Green Gaels will be back in action on Thursday when they host Halton Hills. Game time at the Recreation Complex is 8 p.m.
