Steve Hutchins top player taken in second round

DENVER, Colorado -- A handful of players with connections to the Durham Region lacrosse scene were lucky enough to hear their names called at the National Lacrosse League annual draft on Saturday in Denver, Colorado.
Steve Hutchins led the parade, the first player chosen in the second round (15th overall) to Edmonton. Hutchins appeared in 18 games for the Whitby Warriors this past season, leading the team in scoring with 24-27-51 totals. His strong play continued in playoff series against Peterborough and Six Nations, collecting 17 points.
Hutchins was followed closely by teammate Marc Jackson, also taken in the second round, 23rd overall, by Minnesota. Jackson potted 10 goals and added 11 assists in 18 games this season.
The fourth round produced a trio of names. Warriors netminder Joel Weber, who posted a 7.32 goal against average this season, was selected by Portland (44th overall), while teammate Tyler Worden, who had three points in 17 games, went 49th to Toronto. In between those selection, Clarington Green Gaels captain Steve Conrad went 45th to Edmonton. Conrad captained the Green Gaels to a perfect 20-0-0 season, contributing 17-10-27 numbers along the way.
Another player, Wes McDonald of the Brooklin Redmen, was selected in the fifth round, 55th overall by Toronto.
