Oshawa new home construction solid in April
DURHAM -- Despite a housing slowdown in the United States construction in the Oshawa Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) keeps growing.
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) released new home construction figures showing a total of 172 new housing foundations were laid this April, up by 85 per cent from the same month last year. April housing starts were in fact in line with the long-term average registered in the area. The Oshawa Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) includes Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington.
In April, the single-detached segment saw close to an 80 per cent boost in housing starts compared to the same month last year. Twice as many townhouses were started during the month.
On a year over year basis, all housing types (i.e., single-detached, semi-detached, townhouses and apartments) contributed to the stronger construction in 2008. Year-to-date, a total of 514 new homes started in the Oshawa CMA, 40 per cent more than in the same period of 2007.
"The increase in Oshawa housing starts so far this year is the outcome of strong new home sales in preceding years," said Inna Breidburg, CMHC's market analyst. "Robust demand for new homes was driven by respectable employment growth and by in-migration flows. Rising mortgage carrying costs, more balanced resale market and slowing economy will dampen new home demand. Home starts are expected to remain near the historic average."
