Lots of family fun at low prices

Coming up this weekend in Durham Region, a variety of events that don’t bust your budget.
Catch Christmas Found at the Embassy, 416 Taunton Rd. W. in Oshawa. It’s a holiday play written and directed by the pastor of the church. The drama includes singing, dancing and a few surprises. Admission is free. Three nights, three shows all beginning at 7 p.m. from Dec. 7 to Dec. 9.
Sharpen your skates and lace up Dec. 8 for the Rogers Charity Skate at the Children’s Arena, just off Adelaide Avenue in Oshawa. Bring a non-perishable food donation for the Simcoe Hall Settlement House and receive a hot dog and drink coupon. Watch out for clowns on skates, get your face painted and win prizes from Rogers, Teletoon and Family Channel. It begins at 2 p.m.
Bowmanville’s Moonlight Magic tree lighting ceremony is Dec. 7. Head to the core of town to enjoy carols, hot chocolate and, of course, the official tree lighting. It starts at 6 p.m. and ends at midnight. Dress warmly.
Step back 100 years in Port Perry for the Children’s Old-Fashioned Christmas, Dec. 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Scugog Shores Museum, 16210 Island Road. Have a visit with Santa in the Pioneer Schoolhouse and tour the Museum Village. Kids can create Victorian crafts and learn about holiday heritage. Free refreshments will be offered.
Head to the Port Perry United Church at 294 Queen St. to listen to a CBC reading of Dicken’s, A Christmas Carol, on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. All proceeds are donated to Durham Youth Housing.
Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Whitby offers public skating this weekend Saturday at 3 p.m. to 4:45 and Sunday at 2 p.m. to 3:45. Bring your own skates. Sharpening is offered at the Pro Shop. Admission is $3 for children, $4.50 for adults, $12 for a family of four and $13.50 for a family of five.
