OSHAWA -- The three-year-old boy injured in a shocking attack on his family last Saturday in south Oshawa has passed away.
Durham police confirmed Wednesday afternoon Nathan Kelly had succumbed
to his injuries earlier in the day. His mother, 26-year-old Leslie
Kelly, died at the scene of the attack on Glen Street in Oshawa
Saturday.
Ms. Kelly and her son are Durham's fourth and fifth homicide victims of the year.
Nathan's father, Rick, 29, and five-year-old brother Riley were also
injured when knife-wielding Gino Petralia burst into their townhouse in
the midst of a family celebration. Police said Wednesday they are
recovering in hospital and expected to survive. Nathan had clung to
life since being rushed to hospital.
Durham police later shot and killed Mr. Petralia. The Province's Special Investigations Unit is investigating that shooting.
It's believed a child custody dispute -- not involving either of the
young Kelly children -- sparked Mr. Petralia's murderous rampage.
In a media release Wednesday afternoon Durham police spokesman Dave
Selby extended thanks from the family to the community for the kindness
and compassion shown in the wake of the ghastly events.
"The
family is making private funeral arrangements for both Leslie and
Nathan and asks that the media and the public respect their privacy and
allow them to mourn these terrible losses privately," Mr. Selby stated.
Mr. Selby also noted the family had consented to donate Nathan's organs.
Two trust accounts have been established to assist the survivors of the
incident. Donations to the Kelly Family Trust can be made at any CIBC
branch through account number 00892/03-22938 or at any TD Canada Trust
branch via Transit 3184, Account 6322034.
As well, donations of
money and Christmas gifts are now being collected at the following
locations to help the surviving family through the holiday season and
the coming months.
- The Tim Hortons store located at 1251 Simcoe St. N. is now accepting toy donations for the family;
- Wal-Mart Peterborough, located at 1154 Chemong Rd. is accepting
monetary donations and has vowed to match each donation and deposit all
money collected into the trust fund established for the Kellys. The
store will also be hosting fundraising events for the Kellys the
weekend of Dec. 5-7.
- Local mall Santa, Shawn Chiasson, will be
delivering donated gifts to the Kelly family on Christmas Eve. Toys can
be dropped off at Red Carpet Productions, 33b Oak St. in North York, or
at the Pickering Flea Market, 1400 Squires Beach Rd., on Saturdays and
Sundays;
- All Fed-Ex ground drivers in Durham Region will be accepting donations to the family.
