Tweaks made to system that 'works well'

AJAX -- With a little tweaking, the method used to decide if stop signs should be installed has been updated.
While councillors will have the final say, the all-way stop control warrant review outlines how each request for stop signs will be judged.
"The existing warrants work well, but there are few exceptions," Murray Walker, the Town's traffic analyst, told council's community affairs and planning committee on Monday.
Exceptions include sight lines leading to an intersection and the spacing of vehicles between intersections, he said.
The changes to the warrants will "provide greater flexibility" when dealing with a request, said Suzette Shiu, a traffic consultant retained by the Town to help with the review.
Changes will also "provide additional clarity" and offer a "wider range of factors" when considering putting in stop signs. "It will allow for more consistent warrant application," she said.
Among the changes are considering stop signs even if the sight line leading to an intersection is less than 90 metres. Another change includes putting more weight on the accident history of an intersection.
A change at the provincial level also means an environmental assessment is no longer required when considering a stop sign that's being installed to slow down traffic, Ms. Shiu said.
In his report, Mr. Walker noted, "Implementation of all-way stops should only be considered under warranted conditions and when supported from an engineering standpoint."
